Chennai saw another misfortune as 18 patients in an ICU at the Madras Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology (MIOT) hospital died after power outage at the hospital cut off oxygen supply to ventilators. Nine men and five women were among the dead. There were 75 patients in total in the ICU.
Employees at the hospital had neglected patients and left after the MIOT hospital was flooded. The 18 patients who died were ‘highly critical’, J Radhakrishnan, state health secretary told the media adding 570 members were being treated in the hospital.
Radhakrishnan, however, has denied that power outage led to the deaths. He said the reason for the deaths was unclear and that an investigation had been ordered. He visited the hospital along with Health Minister.
Besides those who died due to shortage of oxygen, other 27 died with electricity short circuit when the rain water inundated the power system in the hospital building. All the 45 dead bodies were shifted to the Royapettah government hospital.
